I Walked 6km Through Rural Vietnam to Find This Hidden Mountain Waterfall
Written by Rajesh Thakur on
Deep in the mountains of Pu Luong, Vietnam, a six-kilometre walk through Kho Muong Village led us to one of the most refreshing experiences of our journey — bathing beneath the cool mountain water of Kho Muong Waterfall.
But getting there turned out to be just as memorable as the waterfall itself.
We began our walk early on a warm summer morning, setting out from one end of Kho Muong Village with the waterfall as our destination.
The road took us through a beautiful rural landscape surrounded by mountains, rice fields, small rivers and traditional village homes. Chickens wandered around houses, cows grazed nearby, vegetables grew in family gardens and villagers were already working in the fields.
Fresh mountain water seemed to accompany us for much of the journey, flowing through streams and rivers beneath the green mountains of Pu Luong.
Walking Through Kho Muong Village
Walking rather than driving gave us time to notice the smaller details of everyday life in rural Vietnam.
We passed local shops, a small post office, homes surrounded by crops and villagers going about their morning. Corn could be seen growing in the fields and drying outside homes, while rice fields stretched towards the mountains.
High above the village, clouds and mist moved across the forest-covered peaks.
At times, it felt less like walking past the landscape and more like walking into it.
As the morning became warmer, we stopped briefly at a small local restaurant for a drink and some rest before continuing towards the waterfall.
By then, after several kilometres on foot, the thought of cold mountain water was becoming increasingly appealing.
Reaching Kho Muong Waterfall
After walking approximately six kilometres through the summer heat, we finally reached Kho Muong Waterfall.
Surrounded by dense vegetation and mountain forest, water cascaded over the rocks into natural pools below.
There was really only one thing I wanted to do.
Get in.
The water was cold — very cold compared with the warm air we had been walking through — but after six kilometres it felt incredible.
I eventually sat directly beneath the waterfall, letting the mountain water pour over my head and shoulders.
The tiredness from the walk seemed to disappear almost instantly.
For a few moments, there was nothing except the sound and force of the falling water, the surrounding forest and the feeling of being completely immersed in the landscape we had spent the morning walking through.
It was a simple experience, but one of those travel moments that is difficult to reproduce once you leave.
More Than Just a Waterfall
Kho Muong Waterfall was our destination, but the journey there gave us a much closer look at the landscape and village life of Pu Luong.
Instead of arriving by vehicle, taking photographs and leaving, walking allowed the experience to unfold gradually.
Mountains became rivers. Rivers passed through fields. Fields surrounded homes. Animals, crops and people were all part of the same landscape.
And at the end of it all was a waterfall carrying fresh water down from the mountains.
Our day later continued to Ban Don Village, where we walked through beautiful rice terraces to a traditional Thai restaurant and homestay for a late lunch.
After a morning of walking, exploring and swimming beneath a mountain waterfall, that meal overlooking the terraces was a wonderful way to finish the experience.
