Discover Hanoi One Step at a Time
Some cities are best explored slowly, and Hanoi is one of them.
Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, I spent the day walking through the city’s historic streets, discovering hidden laneways, tasting local food, enjoying Vietnam’s famous Egg Coffee and experiencing a traditional Cyclo ride through the heart of the capital.
This episode of My Vietnam Story is less about sightseeing and more about experiencing everyday life in Hanoi.
Walking Through Hanoi’s Old Quarter
The Old Quarter is the historic heart of Hanoi and one of the city’s most fascinating places to explore on foot.
Dating back more than 1,000 years, the area is famous for its narrow streets, French colonial architecture, colourful shopfronts and bustling local markets.
Traditionally, many streets specialised in selling a particular trade or product, creating the unique character that still attracts visitors from around the world today.
Every corner reveals something different, making a simple walk through the Old Quarter one of the best experiences in Hanoi.
The Famous Train Street
One of Hanoi’s most unusual attractions is Train Street.
This narrow residential lane has become world-famous because an active railway runs directly between homes and cafés.
Visitors gather to enjoy Vietnam’s famous Egg Coffee while waiting for the train to pass just metres away. Moments later, the tables return to their original positions and daily life continues as though nothing happened.
It is a unique experience that perfectly captures Hanoi’s character and charm.
Trying Vietnam’s Famous Egg Coffee
No visit to Hanoi would be complete without tasting Egg Coffee.
Created in the 1940s during a milk shortage, this unique drink combines strong Vietnamese coffee with whipped egg yolk and condensed milk, producing a rich, creamy flavour unlike any traditional coffee.
It has become one of Hanoi’s signature culinary experiences and remains popular with both locals and tourists.
Seeing Hanoi from a Traditional Cyclo
After exploring on foot, I experienced Hanoi from a completely different perspective aboard a traditional Cyclo.
These three-wheeled bicycle taxis have been part of Vietnamese life for generations and offer a relaxed way to admire the city’s tree-lined boulevards, French colonial buildings and busy streets.
Unlike travelling by car or bus, a Cyclo allows you to slow down and appreciate the atmosphere around you.
Sometimes, slowing down is the best way to truly discover a city.
Enjoying Local Vietnamese Cuisine
No travel experience is complete without sampling local food.
During the journey, we stopped to enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine while watching everyday life unfold around us.
Sharing a meal at a local restaurant is one of the simplest ways to connect with the culture and experience Hanoi beyond its famous landmarks.
